Who Wrote Tafsir al-Jalalayn?

The tafsir takes its name from its two authors, both known as "Jalal al-Din." Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (791-864 AH / 1389-1459 CE), an Egyptian Shafi'i scholar, began the commentary — writing Surah al-Fatiha, then continuing from Surah al-Kahf through to the end of the Quran (Surah an-Nas). He died before completing the middle portion. His student, Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (849-911 AH / 1445-1505 CE), one of the most prolific scholars in Islamic history, later completed the remaining commentary from Surah al-Baqarah through Surah al-Isra, matching al-Mahalli's style so closely that the two halves read as one continuous work.

سُمي هذا التفسير باسم مؤلفيه، وكلاهما يُدعى "جلال الدين". بدأ جلال الدين المحلي (791-864هـ / 1389-1459م) هذا التفسير، فكتب سورة الفاتحة ثم تابع من سورة الكهف إلى نهاية القرآن (سورة الناس)، وتوفي قبل أن يكمل الجزء الأوسط. فأكمل تلميذه جلال الدين السيوطي (849-911هـ / 1445-1505م) الباقي من سورة البقرة إلى سورة الإسراء، وقد حاكى أسلوب شيخه بدقة حتى بدا التفسير عملاً واحداً متصلاً.
