How the Pages Are Laid Out

This edition is designed for study. When you open the book, the right-hand page shows a full page of the Qur'an in Uthmani script with complete harakat (vowel marks), in the familiar Madinah page layout. The left-hand page carries the tafsir of exactly those verses, and both pages share the same page number. You never have to search for the commentary: the verse and its explanation are always in front of you together.

Within the commentary, the words of the Qur'an being explained are set apart in decorative brackets, so you can see at a glance which phrase al-Mahalli or al-Suyuti is commenting on. Each surah opens with a short note on whether it is Makki or Madani and how many verses it contains.

Why Tafsir al-Jalalayn Is So Widely Studied

Tafsir al-Jalalayn is famous for being short, clear and precise. Instead of long discussions, it explains the meaning of each verse in a few well-chosen words: clarifying difficult vocabulary, noting the grammar where it affects meaning, mentioning the occasion of revelation where it helps, and pointing out different recitations where relevant. Because of this, it is usually the first complete tafsir that students read from beginning to end, and it has been taught in madrasahs and Islamic universities for over five centuries.

Its brevity is also what makes it so useful for revision. Many scholars keep a copy of al-Jalalayn on the desk as a quick reference, and many teachers use it as the base text for weekly tafsir lessons.

The Two Jalals: How the Tafsir Was Written

The name al-Jalalayn means "the two Jalals", after the two authors who both carried the title Jalal al-Din.

Imam Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (791–864 AH / 1389–1459 CE) was a respected scholar of fiqh, Arabic and tafsir in Cairo, known for his careful and concise writing. He wrote the commentary from Surah al-Kahf to the end of the Qur'an, together with Surah al-Fatihah, but passed away before he could complete the first half.

Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (849–911 AH / 1445–1505 CE) was one of the most prolific scholars in Islamic history, writing hundreds of works on tafsir, hadith, fiqh, Arabic language and history. He completed the tafsir from Surah al-Baqarah to Surah al-Isra, following al-Mahalli's method so closely that the two halves read as one book. This edition includes biographies of both imams and al-Suyuti's concluding note.

Who Is This Book For?

• Students of Arabic and Islamic studies – the standard first tafsir in Alimiyyah and Dars-e-Nizami courses.

• Teachers and imams – a reliable, concise reference when preparing lessons and khutbahs.

• Hifz graduates – the natural next step to understand the meaning of what you have memorised.

• Arabic readers – anyone comfortable reading Arabic who wants a complete tafsir in a single volume.

If you do not yet read Arabic comfortably, consider an English tafsir such as Tafsir Ibn Kathir in English (10 volumes) instead.

How to Study With This Edition

Read a page of the Qur'an on the right first, then read the tafsir on the facing page, matching each bracketed phrase to its place in the verse. Note new vocabulary as you go. Many students read one page a day, which completes the whole tafsir in about a year. For deeper study, read al-Jalalayn first to understand the basic meaning, then turn to a longer tafsir such as Ibn Kathir for detail.

Large 17x24 Edition or Small Edition?

This is the large 17 x 24 cm hardcover, with comfortable text size for long study sessions at a desk. If you need a compact copy to carry to class, see the Tafsir al-Jalalayn small size side-by-side edition.

  • Dear Brothers/Sisters,
    Assalamu alaikium wa rahmatullah.

I have received the book in good condition. Jazakumullah for that. However, I thought this copy should have covered the full Tafseer, and this was the impression that I had from the online image and description. Unfortunately, it has not been the case.

Nevertheless, I would appreciate it if you could send me the link to the rest of the volumes of Tafseer Jalalayn. Furthermore, I would appreciate it if you could provide that for me for free, as I paid for the book thinking it would be for the whole Tafseer. And I believe it is not a difficult task for Darus Salam, being a generous organisation reaching out to the wider mankind with great generosity.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
