What Does "Exégèse abrégée" Mean?

Ibn Kathir's original tafsir is very long and includes many chains of narration, repeated reports and some weak or Isra'iliyyat narrations that he quoted in order to discuss them. Al-Misbah al-Munir is an abridgement prepared by a team of scholars at Darussalam under the supervision of Shaykh Safiur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri, the author of The Sealed Nectar. It keeps Ibn Kathir's own explanations and the authentic narrations he relied on, while removing repetitions, lengthy chains and weak material. The result is a tafsir that is faithful to Ibn Kathir, easier to read and more reliable for everyday study. This French edition, "Exégèse abrégée", is a translation of that abridgement.

Ibn Kathir's Method: Explaining the Qur'an by the Qur'an

Ibn Kathir is valued above all for his method, known as tafsir bil-ma'thur (commentary based on transmitted reports). For each passage, he first explains the Qur'an by other verses of the Qur'an. He then turns to the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, then to the statements of the Companions and their students, and only after that to the Arabic language.
