Why This Book Is a Classic
Ibn al-Qayyim wrote this work more than 650 years ago as part of Zad al-Ma'ad, his great study of the Prophet's ﷺ way of life. In it he shows that Islam cares for the whole person, both body and soul. He sets out how the Prophet ﷺ treated illness, what he recommended for staying healthy, and how faith, du'a and the Qur'an play their part in healing. He brings together the hadith on health, explains them, and compares them with the medical knowledge of his own time. That is why the book is still one of the most widely read Islamic books on health today.
What You Will Learn Inside
1. The Prophet's ﷺ approach to medicine
Ibn al-Qayyim explains that the Prophet ﷺ encouraged Muslims to seek treatment: "Allah has not sent down a disease without sending down a cure for it." He describes three ways of healing found in the Sunnah: natural remedies, spiritual remedies, and a combination of both.
2. Healing of the heart and soul
Before the body, the book turns to the heart. It covers the Qur'an as a cure, the power of du'a and dhikr, ruqyah with Surah Al-Fatihah and the last surahs, and protection from the evil eye. It also covers patience and trust in Allah during illness.
3. Treating common illnesses
The book collects the Prophet's ﷺ guidance on everyday complaints, including fever, headaches, stomach problems, eye conditions, wounds and skin problems. It also shows how the Prophet ﷺ dealt with epidemics, including the well-known hadith about not entering or leaving a land where plague has broken out.
4. Sunnah foods and remedies
Detailed chapters explain the remedies most associated with the Sunnah: honey, black seed (Nigella sativa), hijama (cupping), Zamzam water, Ajwa dates, talbinah, olive oil, milk and more. For each, Ibn al-Qayyim gives the relevant hadith and explains its benefits.
5. A healthy daily lifestyle
The Prophet's ﷺ guidance on eating in moderation ("a third for food, a third for drink and a third for air"), drinking, sleep, exercise and hygiene. These are simple habits for a balanced, healthy life that every family can follow.
6. A guide to natural remedies
The final part of the book is a wide-ranging guide to foods, herbs, plants and natural substances mentioned in the Sunnah and in classical medicine. For each one it gives a short description and explains its uses and benefits.
