Al-Misbah Al-Munir is a single-volume Arabic abridgment of Tafsir Ibn Kathir, one of the most widely relied-upon commentaries on the Quran. It condenses the original multi-volume tafsir into one hardcover reference while keeping Ibn Kathir's method of explaining each verse through the Quran itself, the authentic Sunnah, and the statements of the Sahabah and early scholars.

Ibn Kathir and the Original Tafsir

The base text, Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, was written by Al-Hafiz Imad ad-Din Isma'il ibn Kathir (701-774 AH / c. 1300-1373 CE), a student of Ibn Taymiyyah and adh-Dhahabi. He is buried in Damascus beside Ibn Taymiyyah, at his own request. His tafsir is regarded by scholars such as Ibn Baz and Ahmad Shakir as the foremost example of tafsir bil-ma'thur, meaning it explains the Quran primarily through narration rather than personal opinion.

Who Prepared This Abridgment

This edition was prepared by a committee of scholars under the supervision of Sheikh Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri, the same scholar known for authoring The Sealed Nectar (Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtum). The title page of this printing states it was compiled by "a group of scholars" (جماعة من العلماء) under his supervision, and describes this as a new, revised and corrected printing (طبعة جديدة منقحة ومصححة). Sheikh al-Mubarakpuri supervised the abridgment; the tafsir content itself remains Ibn Kathir's own explanation of the Quran.

How the Text Was Abridged

An abridgment of this kind works by keeping the sahih and hasan narrations Ibn Kathir cited under each verse and reducing material graded as weak, while preserving his verse-by-verse structure and his citations from earlier scholars. As with any abridgment, some of the supporting references and cross-citations found in the full original are condensed; readers who want every chain of narration and every scholarly aside in full should use the complete, unabridged Tafsir Ibn Kathir alongside this edition.

Is Every Report in This Tafsir Authentic?

No single tafsir, including this one, should be read as though every report inside it carries the same grade. Ibn Kathir's original commentary is stronger on hadith criticism than most earlier tafsirs, but it still includes some narrations of varying strength, particularly around historical detail. This abridgment reduces weaker material, but readers researching a specific ruling or historical report are still encouraged to check its grading rather than assume uniform authenticity across the whole book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the English 10-volume Tafsir Ibn Kathir sold by Darussalam?
It is the Arabic-language, single-volume abridgment. Darussalam's English edition is a separate translated and expanded set; this Arabic edition is the more compact original-language reference.

Who actually wrote the tafsir content?
Ibn Kathir wrote the original commentary. Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri supervised the team that abridged it into this single volume; he did not write new tafsir of his own in this edition.

Is this suitable for a first-time reader of tafsir?
Yes. Its single-volume format and condensed references make it more approachable than the full unabridged tafsir, while keeping the same verse-by-verse structure.
